ASME Quick (Fast) Opening Closures
As defined by ASME B31.4 and ASME B31.8 a quick-opening closure is a pressure- containing component used for repeated access to the interior of a piping system.
As defined by ASME VIII-1 UG-35.2 (a) (1): Quick-actuating or quick-opening closures are those that permit substantially faster access to the contents space of a pressure vessel than would be expected with a standard bolted flange connection.
PEI’s expanded definition is “a quick opening closure allows the operator quick, easy, and safe access to the interior of a pressure vessel.”
Process industry piping engineers and equipment designers, in response to safety concerns and the need to increase productivity and reduce downtime, are revising their specifications to require extremely quick opening type closures that do not require tools. Anticipating this trend, Tube Turns®’ TOOL-LESS® closure was introduced in 2008, with great success. Applications include scraper traps, filters, strainers, separators/coalescers, terminal manifolds, meter provers, distillation towers, storage tanks, or any pressure vessel requiring frequent access.
The TOOL-LESS® closure satisfies the design requirements of ASME B31.3, B31.4, B31.8, and Section VIII, Div. 1. The entire design has been verified through proven stress calculations, the latest finite element analysis software, and strain gauge testing, establishing a high level of confidence in the structural integrity of the TOOL-LESS® closure. In addition, fatigue analysis based on severe field condition data has been successfully conducted on all closure sizes and classes. TOOL-LESS® closures are available in Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel, and other alloys, along with a choice of elastomer lip seal materials to meet the user’s temperature and process compatibility requirements.
TOOL-LESS® operation is smooth and direct and even the largest unit can be opened or closed in a matter of seconds by one person, and as the name implies, without special tools. Complete installation, operating and maintenance instructions are furnished with each TOOL-LESS® closure.
Our Pressure Warning Device assures both pressure warning and mechanical locking of the closure prior to commencement of operation. The Pressure Warning System alerts the operator to any residual pressure inside the vessel should the operator inadvertently attempt to open the closure before all pressure has been relieved. The TOOL-LESS® closure safety system meets the requirements of UG-35 for quick-opening closures.
Tool-Less Closures are available in horizontal and vertical configurations. Horizontal closures are available in the left (standard) or right hand hinging and include a robust double-pivoting adjustable hinge. Vertical closures can be offered with a davit or lifting lug depending on customer preference. Best used for: pig traps, filters, strainers, scrubbers, heat exchangers, blowdowns, and other vessels
Designed for long life, each Tool-Less Closures is furnished with a fully molded self energized lip seal with an integral stainless steel backing ring. Standard lip seal material is Buna-N (-20F to 250F); optional seal materials include FKM Viton, HNBR, Ethylene Propylene, and Explosive Decompression Resistant FKM.
Safe, quick, and reliable access to pipelines
Code Stamping of Tube Turns Closures is available on request at a nominal fee. This includes the furnishing of Partial Data Reports (Form U-2A) verifying shop inspection by an authorized inspector of the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors and the Affixing of the ASME Stamp.
Designed to be durable and to minimize spare parts. Lip Seals and Other spare parts are in stock when replacement is needed. Quick opening closure is customizable to specific design codes, pressure ratings, material requirements, and installation conditions.
The standard hub material is SA350LF2 CL2 combined with SA694F46 (higher yields available). The MTR provided with every closure will list the chemical properties including the &CE to provide a good quality weld (typically .45%)
TUBE TURNS® Division designs and manufactures its products in accordance with Section VIII, Division 1 and Division 2 of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. The ASME Code controls the pressure vessel design, materials, welders' qualifications, methods of construction, testing, inspections, and documentation. We are U-Stamp and U2-Stamp certified through ASME, hold an R-Stamp for repair, and are authorized to register products with the NB-Stamp.
If your application calls for a weld neck flange. Tube Turns is able to perform the welding in our shop to save the end-user time. Tube Turns has hundreds of Welding Procedures to follow your specifications.
